Glycerin: Deep Hydration and Skin Barrier Support for Acne & Rosacea

What is Glycerin?

Glycerin, a naturally occurring humectant, is widely recognized for its ability to deeply hydrate the skin without clogging pores, making it an ideal ingredient for acne-prone and rosacea-prone skin. Its unique molecular structure allows it to attract and retain moisture from the environment, helping to keep the skin hydrated and healthy.

For acne-prone skin, glycerin is particularly beneficial because it hydrates the skin without causing comedogenic effects. Many acne treatments tend to dry out the skin, leading to irritation and an overproduction of sebum, which can worsen breakouts. Glycerin helps balance moisture levels, soothing irritated skin while preventing dryness and flaking. A study published in The Journal of Dermatological Treatment demonstrated that glycerin improves skin hydration, which is crucial for maintaining a healthy skin barrier and reducing the frequency of acne flare-ups.

In addition to its hydrating properties, glycerin supports the skin’s natural barrier function. This is particularly important for those with rosacea-prone skin, as the skin barrier is often compromised, leading to increased sensitivity and redness. Glycerin strengthens the barrier, helping to protect the skin from environmental stressors that can trigger rosacea flare-ups. A study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science showed that glycerin enhances skin barrier recovery, improving the skin’s ability to retain moisture and resist irritants.

Glycerin’s non-irritating and non-comedogenic properties make it a gentle yet effective option for those with both acne and rosacea. By providing deep hydration and barrier support, glycerin helps maintain the skin’s overall health while minimizing the risk of irritation and flare-ups.
